Ο Όμηρος και η Ίος
Όταν μιλάμε για την Ίο, είναι δύσκολο να μην αναφερθούμε στον Όμηρο. Η παράδοση θέλει τον μεγάλο ποιητή να έχει ταφεί εδώ, σε έναν λόφο με θέα το Αιγαίο. Είναι μια ιστορία που δεν εμφανίστηκε πρόσφατα, αλλά διατηρείται εδώ και αιώνες.
Κατά την έρευνά μας, συναντήσαμε αρκετές αναφορές από περιηγητές του 18ου και 19ου αιώνα, οι οποίοι περιγράφουν τον «Τάφο του Ομήρου» στην Ίο. Παράλληλα, σε χάρτες της εποχής αλλά και σε νομίσματα της ελληνιστικής περιόδου, εμφανίζονται ενδείξεις που συνδέουν το νησί με τον ποιητή.
Αυτό που έχει ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον είναι η επιμονή των παλαιότερων κατοίκων να διατηρήσουν αυτή την παράδοση, ακόμη και όταν η ακριβής τοποθεσία παραμένει ασαφής. Η σχέση της Ίου με τον Όμηρο δεν είναι μόνο θέμα ιστορικής ακρίβειας· είναι μέρος της ταυτότητας του τόπου.
Για πρώτη φορά, μέσα από το Island of Echoes, παρουσιάζουμε σχέδιο της σαρκοφάγου που ανακάλυψε ο βαρώνος Pasch van Krienen, μαζί με φωτογραφικό υλικό που μέχρι σήμερα παρέμενε σε αρχεία. Τα στοιχεία αυτά βοηθούν να σχηματίσουμε μια πιο ολοκληρωμένη εικόνα γύρω από αυτή την παράδοση.

Homer and Ios
When speaking about Ios, it is difficult not to mention Homer. According to tradition, the great poet was buried on the island, on a hill overlooking the Aegean. This is not a recent idea, but a story that has been preserved over centuries.
During our research, we came across several references from 18th and 19th century travellers describing the “Tomb of Homer” in Ios. At the same time, historical maps and coins from the Hellenistic period provide further indications linking the island to the poet.
What stands out is the persistence of the local population in maintaining this tradition, even when the exact location remains uncertain. The connection between Ios and Homer is not only a matter of historical accuracy, but also part of the island’s identity.
For the first time, through Island of Echoes, we present a drawing of the sarcophagus discovered by Baron Pasch van Krienen, along with photographic material that remained in archives until recently. These elements help form a more complete picture of this tradition.
